  • Vegetarianism

    Vegetarianism

As you progress with your personal development you will become more aware of the world around you and your impact upon it. This will lead you to question certain aspects of your life and how you are currently living it. See also A Life Well Lived - Personal Responsibility.

You are likely to consider how you affect:

    • the environment and what you can do to minimise damage done

    • other people and how you interact with each other

    • the well being of other living creatures

The environmental issue is ongoing and ever changing and will always be such. There is plenty of information available regarding the impact of modern living upon the planet and what the current thinking is with regard to how best to minimise the negative aspects of it. This information changes constantly as new things are learned so therefore we will not comment upon it other than to say that whilst environmental awareness is of great importance, so is keeping a sense of perspective and remembering that life is still to be lived albeit responsibly.

Your interaction with other people is dealt with in A Life Well Lived - Personal Responsibility and also Turn The Other Cheek.

During the learning curve that is personal development something that very often arises is the ethical issue of eating meat, fish and fowl. This is very understandable - after all, you are accepting the responsibility for how you treat all living things during this earthly life and many people begin to feel uncomfortable with the concept of killing something in order to eat it and begin to question whether it is spiritually acceptable to do so.

Spirit have no difficulty with meat, fish and fowl being consumed, they are an important part of the food chain and should be respected as such. What is important to consider however, is the quality of life of any living creature and the humanity with which that life is ended. A well cared for animal given the freedom to live as natural and unencumbered a life as it is possible for it to have and a quick humane death will reward with good quality food that can be enjoyed with a clear conscience. To then use as much of the animal as possible - for example the skin for leather, is to show the animal respect.

However, to kill or maim an animal in order to use a small part of it for financial reward with disregard for the animal's suffering shows it great disrespect and will incur karmic debt.

There will be some people who, having read this, still feel uncomfortable with the concept of eating meat. There is nothing wrong with this, it is personal choice and as such anyone has the right to make the decision to follow a vegetarian diet.

Whatever diet you decide to follow, ensuring that it is nutritiously balanced is, once again, your responsibility.

  • Turn The Other Cheek!

There are many different ideas regarding the concept of Spirituality. For some it has a mystical feeling that is for other people and not themselves, for others it is synonymous with religious services and still others see 'being spiritual' as a step on the road towards sainthood. This is because they feel that to follow a spiritual path is not compatible with living in a modern world of 'dog eat dog' and everyone looking out for 'number 1'. They feel that if they 'turn the other cheek' they will lose by it.

As has been discussed in A Life Well Lived - Personal Responsibility, even though your earthly life is affected and sometimes restricted by things that are beyond your control, your reaction to these external factors is always a matter of choice - however limited that choice may be.

What is meant by 'turning the other cheek'?

To turn the other cheek is generally taken to mean choosing to ignore or forgive a wrong done to oneself and to give the wrong doer a second chance. It is seen as the 'spiritual' thing to do but is this necessarily the case? Indeed forgiveness is a very fine quality and is something that is part of walking a spiritual path, but it is not always understood.

To be able to ‘turn the other cheek' and forgive a person or situation, you first need to know the reasons why it happened. You need to know what, if any, part you played in what happened and the circumstances surrounding both the situation and the other person. Only then can you make an informed decision about how you wish to handle the situation. A difficult situation well handled can be turned into a very positive experience for all concerned if someone has the will to make the necessary first move.

Sometimes it seems that it is always the same person who makes the first move to resolve a situation and this can be for a number of reasons:

    • some people seem to be natural 'peace makers'

    • some people seem to be unable to bring themselves to apologise or take the first steps to resolve an issue even when they realise that it will remain unresolved if they maintain this stance and have a tendency to rely on others to do it for them

    • some people are unable to tolerate bad feeling within their circle of family and friends

While it is always desirable that problematic issues are dealt with, how they are dealt with is important too. You cannot live an earthly life without difficulties occurring during that lifetime and there will be times when you are the cause of those difficulties which, of course, makes dealing with them your responsibility. Dealing with them well is part of your personal growth and development.

However, you must remember that this is true of everyone else too and there will be times when to take on a responsibility that is not truly yours would be wrong for not only you, but everyone else involved too. In such a situation you would bring about a much better result if you were to make the attempt to help everyone involved in the situation to understand what had caused it.

To turn the other cheek also means knowing when a situation or perceived slight is really not significant enough to warrant a reaction from you and that to mentally step away from the situation would be the best solution on that occasion.

  • Suicide

The end of an earthly life is an emotive subject for many reasons.

    • The person whose earthly life is coming to an end may not be emotionally ready for it to end at that point
    • The person may not be ready to leave loved ones behind
    • The loved ones of the person whose earthly life is coming to an end may not feel ready to let them go
    • The manner of the ending of the earthly life may be distressing or premature in a way that feels very unfair or is not due to illness.

There is much debate as the whether another world exists or if the earthly life being lived is all there is. This has been discussed in A Life Well Lived – Personal Responsibility, Heaven and Hell Explained and Re-incarnation And Your Purpose For This Earthly Life.

Is it possible for the ending of an earthly life to be considered ‘good’?

This is very much down to personal opinion. There are people to whom the ending of an earthly life can never be considered to be a good thing. Very often the people who feel this way do not believe that there is anything other than the earthly life but this is not always the case.

When you are dealing with the emotive subject of being parted from a loved one, even if you are able to accept that it is only for a relatively short period of time, it can be difficult to keep a sense of perspective. It is not possible for people to live forever – the animal that is the human body is not designed that way and will, at some point, break down. This very often happens over a period of time and in some cases can be a slow and painful process.

    A good life

If someone has lived a full and useful earthly life and the ending of that earthly life has been peaceful it can be easier for those left behind to accept its inevitability. Equally, if someone who has lived a full and useful earthly life has the misfortune to suffer towards the end of that life, those left behind can accept that although they miss the person they love, they are no longer

suffering. When someone’s earthly life ends at the hands of another person, or at their own hand, it is, almost without exception very much more difficult for the people who love them to deal with.

    Is suicide a ‘sin’?

When someone reaches the point that they feel their earthly life has become so unbearable that they cannot continue with it and that the only choice left to them is to bring it to an end, the effects of that decision can be catastrophic.

The people they leave behind are devastated and very often blame themselves for failing to notice the torment that they are sure their loved one must have been feeling. The majority of the world’s religions consider suicide to be a sin and this is another source of worry to those that have been left behind because they wonder what has happened to the spirit of the person that took their own life and are unsure if they will be able to meet again when it is their own time to return to Spirit.

In answer to the above question, no, it is not a ‘sin’ and the person in question will be welcomed back into the Spirit World and will be loved and cared for. As discussed in Free Will, you have the right to make the decisions that affect your earthly life and accept the consequences.

However, suicide is never the answer to life’s problems and what ever the person is avoiding dealing with on the earth plane will still have to be dealt with on return to Spirit before they can move on and continue with their spiritual life which of course means that the consequences return with the person to the Spirit World just as they do with any other decision.

Almost without exception, the people who return to Spirit as a result of suicide are shocked and sometimes devastated when they understand just how profoundly what they did affected the people they left behind. This gives them something else they need to work through.

  • Re-incarnation and Your Purpose for this Earthly Life

There is much debate about whether re-incarnation exits and if so, what form it takes. The object of this article is to clarify this area.

The first and most important thing to state is that you, as Joe or Josephine Bloggs, will live on the earth plane only once. Once the physical body dies, it can never live again although your inner being will continue to live in Spirit.

As soon as you return to Spirit you will become whole again and anything that ailed you physically, mentally or emotionally while you were in a physical body will be healed. You will be cared for and helped to let the memories of earthly illnesses and problems go.

When the time is right, you will be given the opportunity to review your life and during that time you will come to see and understand how everything you did, thought or said affected how you lived your life and the people around you, both good and bad. You are then able to work to correct the negative things you did and clear the karmic 'debt' that was thus created. This process takes as long as is necessary, there is no time limit.

The point at which you begin to review your life will be your decision and until you have done so and have truly repented and made reparation for wrong doing, you will remain where you are in the first part of the Spirit World.

When you have reviewed your life and cleared your karmic debt you will have another decision to make. You may either continue with your progression within Spirit or you may choose to have another life experience on earth. This is what Spirit means by re-incarnation. If you decide to return for another earthly life it will be a different incarnation and could be anywhere in the world and part of any culture. Contrary to some beliefs, you do not decide where your next incarnation will be, it is decided by the Higher Spiritual Council.

A Spirit from a human body does not incarnate in an animal and vice versa. Nor will you be given a handicap or be sent to experience something nasty in order to clear a karmic debt. All karmic debt is dealt with while you are in Spirit. A Spirit will be implanted into a foetus with the intention of the resulting human being living as full, rewarding and useful an earthly life as possible. To deliberately send a Spirit to the earth plane to have done to them what they did to someone else in a previous incarnation would be pointless and would perpetuate the wrong doing, creating a karmic debt for someone else. It would never bring the situation to an end.

Once the decision for another earthly life experience has been made, the Spirit will be cleared of the memories they hold of previous incarnations. They are not lost forever and are re-accessible on return to Spirit, but are not a part of the new incarnation. Your next incarnation might be 200 years or more after your last one and the knowledge you had of that time would no longer be relevant. It would cause confusion and you would be unlikely to learn very much from your latest incarnation. As explained in Look Within the Spirit will retain the memory of the skills they have previously had but without their context.

Your purpose for this earthly life

This brings us to why you are on the earth plane reading this. Many people who find that the Spirit World does exist and develop their connection with Spirit, believe that this must have happened because they came to the earth plane to fulfil a great purpose.

The truth is that you are already doing what you incarnated for. You incarnated to have an earthly life experience and to take the knowledge that you gain back to Spirit to be shared by all. It was also your intention to live a full and useful life helping your fellow human beings as much as you could. This happens in many different and unsung ways every day. The way to get people to walk a spiritual path is to lead by example. This is what you agreed to do before you left Spirit and is all that is expected of you. You have not been sent to the earth plane with a specific 'mission' other than to make the best you can of your earthly life experience. Sadly, too many people waste a lot of time waiting to learn what they are there to do rather than doing what they can.

There are many people who live good, useful lives that are Spiritual in all but name and who sometimes deny the existence of Spirit even while they are living a good life. This is not to imply that such people will not accumulate karmic debt - it is not possible to live an earthly life without doing so, but they are still doing what they came to the earth plane to do and return to Spirit having done all that was asked.

  • Protection

If you have made the decision to begin or continue your developmental journey, learning to protect yourself is extremely important

You may be surprised to read the above statement and wonder what you need to be protected from. When you begin your development you are opening up a connection to Spirit. This affects your aura which will gradually become bigger and brighter.

If you do not learn to protect yourself by "dampening down" your aura after you have finished meditating or working with Spirit, you are likely to find your energy becoming depleted when you are in the company of people whose energy levels are lower than yours and who unknowingly tap into yours whilst in your company. While allowing this to happen may feel like an altruistic thing to do, it would not take very long before you felt the ill effects, and not only cease to be of help to anyone else, but would be in need of help yourself.

Another reason to protect yourself is so that you do not attract the attention of Spirits who have remained close to the earth plane. There are a number of reasons why this sometimes happens at the end of an earthly life:

    • Sometimes the Spirit had a particularly strong connection to a place or to people and is not yet ready to leave and return home due to a mistaken belief that they would be severing all ties

    • Very occasionally, after a sudden passing, the spirit does not realise what has happened and can take some time to be convinced

    • It can also happen when someone has chosen to lead a life on earth that has paid no heed to the harm their choices caused, in the mistaken belief that Spirit does not exist and therefore there will not be any price to pay. After passing over, the shock and sometimes shame can lead some spirits to decide not to cross fully to the spirit world and remain close to the earth plane instead

    Void

There is a void between the earth plane and the Spirit World which is where Spirits who choose not to make the final crossing home at that time remain. Spirit works constantly to locate these earthbound spirits and help them to make the transition. There are also people on earth who have chosen to use their connection with Spirit to help in this matter too. They are called Rescue Workers and it is very valuable work. Free will does not end when the spirit leaves the physical body however and if a Spirit resists attempts to help them to make the transition, they cannot be forced to, but they are never given up on.

The reason that this can be a problem for you if you do not learn to protect yourself, is because there is very little energy in this void and they are drawn to you in order to top theirs up. This will have the same effect as another person doing this as discussed above.

These earthbound Spirits cannot actually do you any physical harm other than draining your energy so you should not be alarmed by what you are reading here.

You may be wondering why you need to learn to do this - after all, it is what your Guides are for is it not? There are two reasons

    • Your Guides have other things to do too

    • Your well being is your responsibility and you must learn to take the appropriate steps

How to protect yourself is simple and a matter of practice.

Remember that this should be done at the end of meditation and/or a period of working with Spirit. Choose whichever way suits you best and do this with your feet on the floor to allow the excess energy to flow to earth.

    • Imagine yourself standing under a waterfall or shower and allow the water to wash the excess energy away and draw your aura closer to your body again. See it becoming dimmer as it does so

    • Imagine yourself standing in a sack and draw the sack up over your head and tie it. As you do this, mentally disconnect from Spirit

    • Picture yourself with a large shawl that is big enough to extend from the crown of your head to your feet when it is opened out. Then picture yourself drawing the shawl around your head and body bringing your aura back to your body and dimming as it does so

This process should not need to take more than a minute or so and is all you need to do.

  • Past Lives

A subject that frequently divides opinion is that of Past Lives. There are therapists who specialise in helping people to discover where "their" past lives where lived and "who" they were.

It is an area that requires clarification. First of all, have you had a previous life? The answer to this is no but your inner being may have had none, one or several. See Re-incarnation and Your Purpose For This Earthly Life.

As has been explained in Look Within, as you progress in your development you learn to connect with the inner being within you and are able to share more strongly in the memory of the skills that they have knowledge of.

However, the inner being cannot tell you of the context of those skills, no matter how diligent you are with allowing your connection to develop. As described in Look Within they have no memory of them.

    Past Life Regression Therapy

With no memory to draw on it would be impossible for your inner being to supply you with any facts. If you have heard of Past Life Regression Therapy you may be feeling confused now and wondering how it works. Past Life Regression Therapy is a form of hypnotism and while under the influence of a hypnotic state your mind can supply many things. Over the course of a lifetime, you have seen, heard, read and experienced many things which will remain, often consciously forgotten by you in your sub-conscious memory. It is for this reason that hypnotism can be very successful in helping a suppressed memory to emerge.

There is no doubt that the majority of therapists who practice Past Life Regression Therapy sincerely believe in what they do and do so out of a sincere desire to help people. It is, however, something that is not provable and, for the reasons given above, not possible.

The most important question to ask yourself is why you wish to know about "your" past lives. What purpose would it serve to know where and how your inner being has lived before? Is it so that you can use the knowledge that was gained during past lives? If so, it would not serve you well. What use would knowledge of animal husbandry in the 16th century be to a computer programmer or train driver in the 21st century?

Is it in the hope of finding out that "you" were an important historical figure? What would you gain by this? You may not even like the person you found out about and how would that help you to live this life? Any knowledge from another lifetime would merely cause immense confusion during this one.

What is far more important is who you are in this life and the way that you choose to live it.

  • Other Therapies

If you type words such as new age, alternative or complementary therapies into your internet search engine, you may be surprised by just how many you would be able to choose from.

If you talk to other people about looking for something like this you could very well get as many different recommendations as the number of people that you ask.

    Why are there so many?

There are several reasons for the vast number of therapies available, these are the most common:

    • People have misinterpreted something that they received from Spirit which has then been passed on by word of mouth or in writings which has then gradually changed even more.

    • When something does not work as quickly as people want it to or in the way that they want it to, they will look for something that they think will be better

    • There have been people throughout the ages who have seen this and decided to turn the situation to their own advantage and provide what is wanted regardless of whether or not it has any validity - usually for a substantial fee.

    • A great many do not work other than psychologically therefore people look for something else.

Do any of these other therapies have anything to offer?

Ultimately, the therapies that do make some difference have a direct input from Spirit. Sometimes the therapist carrying out the treatment is aware of this and is deliberately connecting with Spirit during the treatment and sometimes they make a connection without being aware of it. Any therapist who doesn't make a connection to Spirit, deliberate or not, will either not make any difference to the patient or will give the patient a temporary and slight lift by giving away their own energy. The latter reason is why some therapies recommend that their practitioners work in pairs or groups.

The last paragraph states that some therapists make a connection with Spirit without being aware of it. We wish to make it very clear that Spirit will never work with anyone against their will. However, people do not always fully understand what they are doing when they train in their particular therapy and although they realise that they are offering something they do not always fully understand its origin. Some therapies and healing groups refer to Universal Energy for example - this is the same thing as Spiritual Energy.

Connection to Spirit achieved in this way is usually not very strong and is why the results achieved are often disappointing and/or short lived. In short, whatever therapy is used, its efficacy, if any, is a direct result of the input of Spiritual Energy.

    Symbolism

If you have trained in a therapy that uses symbolism and have been taught that it is this that allows spirit to work through you, this is not correct and you need to learn to make a connection for yourself using the method described in Developing your connection If you then wish to carry on using symbols in your work it will be your choice. Spirit do not find them necessary however.

Direct Spiritual Healing from a Healer who has taken time to achieve a strong connection to Spirit will give the most effective results it is possible to give in any individual case. Some Spiritual Healers have also trained in other therapies in order to be able to offer as much as possible. This is not necessary, but some people who are not comfortable with the concept of Spiritual Healing are happier with other forms of therapy and because it means that that person will be helped, Spirit will still work in these circumstances.

A great many of these other therapies carry a heavy financial aspect. Spirit does not have any problem if a Healer levies a reasonable charge for their time although Healing Energy is always free. You may wish to look again if a fee for treatment or training in a therapy seems to be high.

Spirit will work with anyone who is managing to do some good but will step back and not work with someone if what they are doing will cause harm or whose motives are so selfish that they outweigh any good achieved.

We have chosen not to discuss any of the individual therapies that are available because as Human Beings with free will, you have to make your own decisions regarding this matter.

  • Misconceptions About Spirituality

As has been explained in Developing Your Connection, it is the desire of Spirit to work with you while you live your earthly life. It is, and always was intended to be this way.

It is the job of your Guides to help you without interfering in the way that you live your life. (See Free will) It would not therefore make sense that it should be too complicated. However, it would seem that human nature does not find it easy to trust what is simple and so, over many years, people have looked for something deeper. It has been difficult for them to find what they are looking for and so they have worked with what they either think they have found, or what they have misunderstood.

    Ceremony

For some people, ceremony and worship is very important. Spirit do not require it, merely to be treated with respect.

Communication with Spirit does not require special settings, apparatus, clothing or even people - for it is possible for everyone to communicate with Spirit given the will, patience and a true desire to do so.

Unfortunately many methods employed to initiate contact with Spirit do, in reality, make communication more difficult and in some cases impossible.

These methods have not been listed individually here for there are so many of them and more continue to be developed. We will simply emphasise the simplicity of what is required and draw your attention to the articles on this web site that are designed to help you to achieve the best connection that is possible for you.

    Music

If you feel more comfortable listening to relaxing music and/or lighting a candle to help you to achieve the best mind set while you meditate and communicate with spirit, that is fine but more than that is not necessary, and strictly speaking, even that is not necessary. Somewhere quiet and undisturbed is all you truly need.

The ideal is that each and every person having an earthly life will knowingly and consciously live that life with Spirit walking alongside supporting and guiding in a gentle, non-interfering way that does not require the input of any other individual to achieve.

At this time, many things prevent that ideal happening and will take time to correct. The simplest way to bring it closer is for people to embrace a spiritual life that is part of every day life 24 hours a day 7 days a week and is as automatic as breathing. You would not take very many breaths if you had to do something special or organise a place to do it or wait for someone to do it for you.

It has taken many years for these extraneous ideas and ways to grow and Spirit are aware that change will only come as people find the confidence to accept that what they seek is much closer than they have previously understood.

  • Miracles?

One of the most difficult things that any Healer has to contend with is unrealistically high expectations. The very nature of how Healing Energy is delivered via the laying on of hands can lead some people to expect that miracles can be performed.

We need to look at how miracles may be defined. Miracles do occur every day in many ways:

    • the creation of any new life is a miracle, bringing with it so much promise

    • People recover from illnesses they were not expected to recover from

    • People have narrow escapes from, or sometimes in, accidents that could have ended their earthly lives

    • new growth occurs where previously there was desert

    • understanding is reached where war had looked to be a certainty

These are just a few examples of every day miracles and if you care to give it some thought you will doubtless be able to come up with many more.

Do miracles occur when a Healer lays hands on someone in need? If someone has healing and then makes a recovery is that a miracle? Only in the same way that someone making a recovery who is under the sole care of orthodox medicine can be said to have received a miracle. Without the dedication and thirst for knowledge of Scientists and Doctors, the research into disease and many modern treatments would never have been developed and many more people would return home to Spirit much earlier than they do now.

Healing, as has already been said, is intended to be complementary to orthodox medicine and a combination of the two is the desired way forward.

It is not unusual for a patient to consult a Healer when they feel that they have exhausted all other possibilities and have nothing to lose by giving healing a try. Sometimes, over a period of time, Healing can make a difference to that patient and this can lead to that difference being attributed to a miracle - Healing has worked where orthodox medicine failed. The truth is that it is usually a combination of the two that has made the difference.

A Healer should never make claims to be able to perform miracles and Spirit never do. There are times when the illness has taken the breakdown of the body to a point where it is not possible to reverse the damage, but it does not mean that Healing will not help. Sometimes, healing energy can slow or even halt the progress of a condition and it will usually make the patient feel more comfortable and relieve pain. It will never do harm and for this reason Spirit will always welcome the opportunity to do whatever they can. Even where it is not possible for Spirit to prolong a person's earthly life it is possible to make the end of that earthly life more comfortable and dignified and the passing back to Spirit easier than it would otherwise be.

  • Look Within

If you have attended Spiritual groups in the past or currently belong to one, you are likely to have been told at some point to "look within" to find the answers you seek.

What is sometimes not explained is exactly what is meant by this instruction and many people valiantly try to comply but never really know if they have succeeded in what they are trying to do.

So, when you try to look within what are you trying to find and how do you do it?

The spirit within you decided to have the experience of a life on the earth plane. It was implanted into the foetus during the 12th week of pregnancy and this child grew to become the person that is now you.

However, there is much preparation within the Spirit World before such an implantation takes place. If the Spirit has had a previous earthly life, it must have reviewed that life and dealt with any Karmic debt accumulated during that previous lifetime. It will also need to come back without memories that could interfere with the life that you are living now, although it will have knowledge of certain skills that it had in the past but not the context of how it knows them. For more information about this see Re-incarnation and Your Purpose For This Life. When you are looking within, your conscious self is deliberately joining with the inner being that is the Spirit inside the human body and learning to make use of the knowledge it has along with its connection to the Spirit World that is never severed.

    Instinct

As you progress with your personal development and your connection with Spirit you are also learning to connect more strongly with your inner being. The combined knowledge and connection to Spirit that your inner being has can be of great use to you and has always been a part of your life although you have most likely called it 'instinct'. If you have always listened to your instinct, do not stop now, especially if you have started your developmental journey, for it will only become stronger and more reliable. If you have been inclined to ignore what your instinct has told you in the past, now would be a good time to start taking notice of it and seeing how often you are, or would be, right to do so. Your inner being is able to help you when for your Guides to do so would be interference in your life.

    How to "Look Within"

In order to connect with your inner being, you need to do exactly the same as you do to connect with Spirit see Developing Your Connection. If you have situations to deal with and you need help to clarify your thoughts, the time to do this is when you are doing your Simple Relaxation. Do not try to force this process and do not expect answers to hit you like a lightning bolt. You must just let the process happen and be aware it might seem as though nothing is happening for a while, but the more you try to 'chase' it, the more you will block it. Evaluate what your instinct is telling you is the right thing to do, and if it feels right to you, go with it. Learning to trust is a matter of practice.

You will find that the more you relax and allow the process to happen, the more often you will feel confident that the decisions you are making are correct.
